Mindfulness
Wherever You Go, There You Are (ROUGH CUT) by Jon Kabat-Zinn

Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn

This is the book I recommend to anyone interested in leaning about Mindfulness. Dr. Kabat-Zinn's explanation of meditation and its benefits is both fun and inspirational. My copy of this book is so filled with notations and post-its that it has doubled in thickness.

The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh's description of mindfulness and its practice is among the best I have read. His gentle and poetic language helps to convey the balance that can be cultivated through meditation. I usually invite people to sample this work along with Kabat-Zinn's to see which author's approach is a better fit for them.

Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-being

by Martin E. P. Seligman

This is the most recent work by Dr. Seligman and one worth reading by all. While I find it essential that we make sense of the events of our past in order to grow past them, it is also essential that we have the tools to make this possible.  This book provides tools and information that are very useful in charting the way forward in one's life. Dr. Seligman gives an overview and background of the science of positive psychology and the findings that can help all of us experience greater levels of wellbeing. What is especially refreshing about this book is Dr. Seligman's candor regarding his own struggles and journey toward a rationally positive outlook on life. He makes it clear that there are times when it is essential that we take a more pessimistic/cynical perspective but adds the necessity of being able to know when and how to switch into an optimistic modality.

1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12 by Thomas W. Phelan PhD 1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12 by Thomas W. Phelan PhD

Warning:  Dr. Phelan Advocates the use of Time Out.

For those who have made the firm decision to not use any form of time out, this is not the parenting method for you. Time out has gotten a bad reputation in some theoretical circles and has been characterized as a form of mean spirited punishment through rejection.  When used as a threat Time-Out can become this. If it is used as it was originally intended, it is a break from the reinforcement created by a child being able to engage a parent in a power struggle. We all like to be in control and have power. Dr. Phelan's method allows parents to have the control that they must have to enforce boundaries and rules while giving a child the power of making choices. When it is applied correctly it is very effective. The majority of complaints I hear when parents have trouble implementing this method is that their child's tantrums get worse.  If a child has been getting what they want by throwing tantrums it will take a while for them to learn that this is not going to work anymore.  In fact they will intensify this behavior until they realize that it is not going to have the results that they are looking for. This is a hard period for parents to get through and requires a lot of preparation and support. The results are well worth it and, surprisingly, children are relieved to have their parents back in control; it scares children when they feel more powerful than their parents.
